Sunday Night and it’s time to put some pens through misery by writing on packing tape. The contenders are: The Tombow Airpress, the Ohto Horizon, and the Zebra bLen ballpoint pens. They had three simple tasks – Write the alphabet, take an ink smear test, and draw a smiley face.

Let’s get “write” down to it. (sorry..had to be done..) The Tombow Airpress:

The Tombow Airpress, which is a pressurized pen, did ok on the alphabet – held up well on the meat of it-pass. Couldn’t really get the words “smear test” out, but I was surprised when it didn’t smear- 0.5 pass. Smiley face was complete fail.
Up next is the Ohto Horizon Needlepoint pen:

The Ohto Horizon was all over the map with the alphabet – calling that a fail. You can kind of figure out the words “smear test” at the ohto horizon indeed, did not smear when ran my finger over it -Pass. I got a decent smiley face out of the Ohto, so pass.
Next is the Zebra bLen ballpoint pen:

The Zebra bLen’s alphabet was hit and miss, but more miss, so fail. Smear test didn’t work at all – fail. But the Zebra bLen rallied for a smiley face! Pass.
Here are your rankings in this Ballpoint Pen Beat-down:
Winner: Ohto Horizon, Runner-Up: Tombow Airpress, Participation ribbon: Zebra bLen

The omission of the Fisher Space Pen here is puzzling–or did you mean this mainly as a test of pens we might not normally expect would behave well on less-friendly surfaces?

I don’t have a fisher anymore – The tombow is kind of close in that it is pressurized, albeit in a different way. If you’ve got a fisher – try it and let us know!
