The Pilot H-1000, H-2000, and H-3000 mechanical pencils are legendary and they have a price tag to match. Here is a tip that you want to keep in mind when buying a used one – it involves sound. From the retracted state, you will hear 4 distinct clicks. Clicks 1 and 3 will be quieter (release), and clicks 2 and 4 will be louder (lock). If you hear just 3 clicks, something is worn out.
The pilot h-2003 on top clicks 3 times-so something is worn out. In this one’s case, it’s the lock when it’s extended. the h-1005 on the bottom clicks 4 times – still correct. Both pencils still write fine, for now, but my feeling is that the H-2003 may not last as long as the H-1005 if regualarly used. It would be hard to recognize, if you went on looks alone, because they are in similar physical condition. That’s the quick tip-thanks for reading.
